Gold was first discovered in Montana in 1862, on the Beaverhead River in the town of Bannack. Named for the local Bannock Indians, the town briefly served as the state capital in 1864 before the title was given to Virginia City. Today, Bannack remains a ghost town, visited only by the occasional sportsman who wanders through, en route to hunting or fishing spots up river.
